Hammond snubs Wenger

Sportmail reports that Director of Football Nicky Hammond is to stay at Reading

Sportsmail can reveal that Hammond, who holds a similar position at the Madejski Stadium, was offered the job on Friday but had a last-minute change of heart and decided to stick with Reading.

Interesting news, but it probably says more about the unrest at Arsenal than it does about Reading.

Kingsley in the Mascot Olympic Games

I hope you will all wish our favourite mascot well in this weekend’s Mascot Olympic Games

Kingsley Royal will be flying the flag for Reading Football Club when he takes part in the Mascot Olympics this weekend. After a brisk limber-up, he’ll take part in the walk, toboggan plunge, rodeo, dash, penalty shoot-out and a final assault course.

Sounds fun like a football mascot version of It’s a Knockout. If you are in Milton Keynes and have nothing better to do (and let’s face it, if you’re in Milton Keynes, you won’t have anything better to do) go down to the Olympic Games, support the boy and make some noise! (A roar or something)

International Reading Roundup

It’s not been the best of times for Reading’s International troupe of players. Nicky Shorey didn’t feature in England’s qualifier after doing so well against Brazil. It was fairly understandable as Wayne Bridge is a very good player.

However, Ivar Ingimarsson was on the wrong end of a 5-0 drubbing as Iceland were crushed by Sweden. Worse was his part in a goal which is the perfect example of why you should play to the whistle.

Maybe Ingimarsson thought the referree had given a penalty, but I hope he never does that in the Premiership.

Leroy Lita followed up missing a penalty for England Under 21’s by missing a sitter in the game against Italy. He did make up for it somewhat by scoring a good long range effort to make it 2-0. Unfortunately, the Italians got back into the game and made it 2-2.

Reading face United then Chelsea

The 2007/2008 fixtures are out and Reading have got what some might consider a hard start to the season.

Man United away followed by Chelsea at home. 6 points in the bag then.
It might be said that getting the harder games out of the way first is better.
And you might possibly catch them unready. Possibly. If Fergie and Morinhio come back late from holiday or something.

Check out the new away kit for next season.

New Reading Away Kit 2007

I’m not one for away kits and buying kits in general. My shirt still has the old badge on and I bought it in 1994. I’m immensely proud that I still fit into it 13 years later.

Sunderland snap up £3.5m Halford

Strange piece of transfer news. Sunderland have bought Greg Halford for £3.5 million.

Clearly, once we’d got him, we didn’t like the look of him and made a quick profit. But as we only signed Greg in January it seems a very short period of time to assess a player. Surely the best from a young player comes after a period of time settling in and also a good pre-season?

It seems odd that Reading were so sure of their player when they initially bought him, yet ditch him so soon. It comes with the news that De La Cruz has signed a deal for another season, so we’ll continue to have backup for Murty.

Enhanced picture special - Shorey makes his historic debut for England

Shorey for England

Reading defender, Nicky Shorey made his England debut and the OS states became the first Reading player to play for England in 100 years.

I missed the game as I was in Scotland and for some reason I can’t imagine, they didn’t want to show an England friendly. Talking to my friend tonight, it appears that he had a solid game, doing the simple defending well. However, Brazil played quite narrow and he didn’t have someone directly against him.

He made some forward runs but the couple of times he overlapped Joe Cole, he wasn’t passed to. We had a short discussion on whether this was because Cole didn’t want to pass to Shorey or Cole just didn’t want to pass to anyone.

As we’ve sung all season.  Shorey for England!  What a week for the guy.  He got married the next day and then had to cancel the honeymoon to travel to Estonia with all the lads.
