Man United held by the Royals

It was a fantastic result, a great defensive performance and had some tactical genius from “Sir” Steve Coppell.

With De La Cruz and Murty in the line-up, I was wondering what sort of formation Reading were going to line up with. Normally, when Reading go 4-5-1 (a rare event usually only occurring when playing United or another big team) it is Gunnarsson who comes in at the expense of the second striker. But Gunnarsson is starting the season as first choice replacement for Sidwell, so De La Cruz came into the side.

What happened was that Murty man-marked Giggs, Shorey went on Ronaldo and Duberry on Rooney. This was real man to man marking and very hard to do. Often Murty and Shorey were next to each other as they followed their men all over the place. Duberry often ended up in midfield as Rooney dropped deep to collect the ball. Most of the time, United were unable to create any great chances. Their best chance in the first half came when Ronaldo got away from Shorey, was left 1-1 against Hunt. Hunt was left for dead by some great skill and Ronaldo floated the ball to the far post. Giggs took a shot and hit the outside of the post.

One chance Rooney had ended his game. As the ball came in from wide, Rooney rose to meet the ball, Duberry as usual in close attendance. When both players came down, Duberry landed on Rooney’s foot and it turned out to be broken. Rooney limped off, and was replaced by Nani in the second half.

United had even more possession in the second half, but seemed less potent without Rooney as they had no real striker. However, Reading just couldn’t clear the ball properly as Ferdinand and Vidic kept a close eye on Kevin Doyle. It got worse when Doyle was replaced by Kitson. 37 seconds after coming on, Dave closed down Evra from a throw and mistimed his tackle, catching Evra with studs on the leg. The ref ran over as fast as his little legs could carry him and brandished the red card. It was really harsh on the forward but the tackle did look nasty. However, most people agreed it should have been yellow. In fact, I noticed that Rooney did a similar challenge on De La Cruz in the first half which was a simple foul (ok, it wasn’t such full on contact as Kitson’s but was a similar thing and the difference was in the timing not the intent).

In the end, Reading held on to get a well deserved point. I should also point out that the travelling Reading fans out sung 70-odd thousand Man United fans. I can’t wait for Wednesday night, with a home crowd in full voice and the visit of Chelsea, sure to be interesting with Jose Mourinho and Steven Hunt involved.

Reading 1 Newcastle 0

Reading moved back into 7th place (and the dreaded/earned for UEFA cup spot) with a good win over Newcastle. It was a fairly comfortable victory and was the tail of two returning strikers.

Michael Owen played his first game since that night in the World Cup against Sweden and it was good to see him. He got a round of applause from Reading and Newcastle fans alike when his name was announced. He looked sharp early on, putting the ball into the back of the net, but was called offside. After an early good start, Newcastle faded and Owen didn’t get many more chances. He ended up playing the whole 90 minutes probably due to injuries to other Newcastle players. Has any other team been so cursed? Siberski broke his arm mearly colliding with Kitson’s foot.

As Reading grew in dominance of the game, Newcastle were being pegged back and started giving the ball away easily. Carr was dispossess and the ball came to Soel, who despite having another relativly poor game, put a good ball into the box. Oster dummed the ball and it fooled the Newcastle defence leaving Kitson 1-1 with the keeper. A fierce shot hit the back of the net and Kitson was away; his first goal since the opening day of the season. He dived into the East stand in joy. Of course he was booked, silly ref Reilly having already sent off the Reading mascot Kingsley in the first half.

It was a great moment for Dave, a season of frustration for the big striker was over. He was the player I thought would set the Premiership alight with his goals as of the three main strikers, he was the one I thought was best adapted for the top flight. As it was, Doyle came to promience early on and Lita took over once Doyle was hamstrung. Now Kitson is back to nearing his best and he will be our main weapon for next season as the other teams will have seen so little of him.

In tonights game Shorey and Ingarmasson were the standout players and they will probably be competing for Player of the Season too. My vote goes to Nicky Shorey, great defending combined with good forward running at keys times that turned our season round.

Kitson signs new contract

Whilst England stumble around in Europe, nothing much is happening back in England. Whilst the government like to bury bad news under other bigger stories, Reading are using the poor England performance to quietly announce good news. Following on from Steve Coppell, Dave Kitson has signed a new 3 year deal.

Of the three first team strikers that caused havoc in Championship defences last season, I thought Kitson would perform the best in the Premiership. However a nasty tackle by Chris Riggott put paid to that and half Kitson’s season. Luckily both Doyle and Lita have stepped up to Premiership level and we haven’t missed him too much.

Kitson remains the least known of the strikers simply because he has played so few games in the Mediaship (The Sky Premier Media Obsessed League), to the extent that the media thought he was a reserve player when he was brought in by Coppell for the Man United cup games. He may well be our secret weapon next season and provide us plenty of goals.
