Steve Coppell’s Managers Job - 4 years old today.

Four years ago today, the BBC announced that Steve Coppell was the new Reading manager

He takes over with the Royals in mid-table after a run of just one win from six league matches under caretaker boss Kevin Dillon.

Arise, Sir Steve of Coppell. Thank you very much for the last 4 years. They have been fantastic.

Kitson signs new contract

Whilst England stumble around in Europe, nothing much is happening back in England. Whilst the government like to bury bad news under other bigger stories, Reading are using the poor England performance to quietly announce good news. Following on from Steve Coppell, Dave Kitson has signed a new 3 year deal.

Of the three first team strikers that caused havoc in Championship defences last season, I thought Kitson would perform the best in the Premiership. However a nasty tackle by Chris Riggott put paid to that and half Kitson’s season. Luckily both Doyle and Lita have stepped up to Premiership level and we haven’t missed him too much.

Kitson remains the least known of the strikers simply because he has played so few games in the Mediaship (The Sky Premier Media Obsessed League), to the extent that the media thought he was a reserve player when he was brought in by Coppell for the Man United cup games. He may well be our secret weapon next season and provide us plenty of goals.

New deal for Coppell

Steve Coppell has signed a new 2 year deal at Reading.

Steve told readingfc.co.uk, “I have always maintained that contracts are not really a big issue for me, but I have to admit that for the club to have such faith in me is very pleasing, and now I want to repay that faith by continuing to do my job to the best of my ability.”

Fantastic news, and a real break from his normal “one year rolling contract only” mantra. I foresee an excellent couple of seasons ahead at least.

Although I’m a bit worried about the enormous grin on his face. For someone normally so reserved, that is a very happy face. Almost too happy. Either Madejski has drugged him up to get him to sign, or there is a seriously large amount of money written down on that piece of paper.

Now, just get Steve Sidwell to sign.
